With no access to the Internet or online tutorials at the time, he wrote his first game in GW-BASIC by painstakingly retyping code from a book he found at the local library. After graduating from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 2001, he spent nearly a decade working as a software consultant, developing trading and analytics systems for investment banks and large Fortune 100 companies, before eventually leaving his corporate life behind so he could focus on doing what he loved. A self-confessed technology geek, he has spent the time since then working on his own projects and experimenting with every new language and technology that he could, including of course HTML5. During this time he became well known for singlehandedly re-creating the famous RTS game Command and Conquer, as well as Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines entirely in HTML5. Apart from programming, Aditya is passionate about billiards, salsa dancing, fitness and personal development. He maintains a personal website where he writes articles on game programming, personal development, and billiards, as well as shares his popular game demos. When he is not busy writing or working on his own projects, Aditya does consulting work with companies to help them launch new software products and games.

Build Your Own 2D Game Engine and Create Great Web Games teaches you how to develop your own web-based game engine step-by-step, allowing you to create a wide variety of online videogames that can be played in common web browsers. Chapters include examples and projects that gradually increase in complexity while introducing a ground-up design framework, providing you with the foundational concepts needed to build fun and engaging 2D games. By the end of this book you will have created a complete prototype level for a side scrolling action platform game and will be prepared to begin designing additional levels and games of your own. This book isolates and presents relevant knowledge from software engineering, computer graphics, mathematics, physics, game development, game mechanics, and level design in the context of building a 2D game engine from scratch. The book then derives and analyzes the source code needed to implement thes e concepts based on HTML5, JavaScript, and WebGL. After completing the projects you will understand the core-concepts and implementation details of a typical 2D game engine and you will be familiar with a design and prototyping methodology you can use to create game levels and mechanics that are fun and engaging for players. You will gain insights into the many ways software design and creative design must work together to deliver the best game experiences, and you will have access to a versatile 2D game engine that you can expand upon or utilize directly to build your own 2D games that can be played online from anywhere. • Assists the reader in understanding the core-concepts behind a 2D game engine • Guides the reader in building a functional game engine based on these concepts • Lead s the reader in exploring the interplay between technical design and game experience design • Teaches the reader how to build their own 2D games that can be played across internet via popular browsers Jebediah Pavleas is a graduate student in the Computer Science and Software Engineering program at the University of Washington Bothell (UWB). He received a Bachelor of Science in 2012 and was the recipient of the Chancellors Medal for his class. During his time as an undergraduate he took a great interest in both computer graphics and games. His projects included an interactive math application that utilizes Microsofts Kinect sensor to teach algebra, a 2D role-playing game designed to teach students introductory programming concepts, and a website where students can compete in various mini-games to control checkpoints around campus. Relating to these projects, he coauthored publications in IEEE Computers and The Journal of Computing Sciences in Colleges (CCSC). When not working towards his graduate degree, he enjoys designing, building, and playing games of all kinds as well as adapting technology for improved accessibility. A university student in computer science, he is interested in working as a game programmer, focusing on accessibility.

HTML5 Programmers Reference

The HTML5 Programmer’s Reference aims to provide everything a programmer needs for understanding and using the new HTML5 family of standards. Previous HTML standards were focused on defining tags for marking up documents. The HTML5 family of standards not only includes new semantic tags but also defines exciting new JavaScript APIs that can be used to build rich, interactive web applications for both mobile and desktop platforms. The HTML5 Programmer’s Reference focuses on providing real-world non-trivial examples to demonstrate concepts. Chapters include both in-depth discussions and full references for all HTML5 features, as well as extras like how to find the standards, the history of their evolution, and other examples and helpful resources. With this book the reader will learn everything they need to know to build the next generation of web applications. Jonathan Reid has been building web applications professionally for almost two decades. He has built everything from simple informational websites all the way up to complex scientific and business applications, all using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. In addition Jon has worked at some of the top interactive agencies in the United States (EffectiveUI, Crispin Porter + Bogusky) and so he knows what it is like to implement difficult and complex requirements with web technologies on a tight deadline. He currently works for Google, where he is a senior developer on Google Web Designer, an HTML5 authoring tool. Jon lives in Sunnyvale with his partner of 14 years.
